Renn Calder
A ferrite miner at the Community Assistance Center, and the most clear-eyed person in Holo Hollow.
Renn Calder mines ferrite and has no illusions about it. It is rock — useful rock, for exactly as long as somebody still wants enough of it.
You will usually find him at the Holo Hollow Community Assistance Center, which used to be the Visitor Center and now handles local assistance and ration distribution. The old lettering is still legible underneath the newer signage, which is true of a lot of things around here.
What he makes of the place
Renn is the youngest of the people you will meet in Holo Hollow and the least interested in the story the town tells about itself. Every year, he will tell you, somebody says ferrite demand is about to turn around — and every year that turns into one more reason to wait one more year.
He is not sneering at anyone for staying. He knows everybody here, he knows which roof leaks, and he knows exactly who turns out at two in the morning when something breaks. That is the point, as far as he is concerned: if he hated the place, leaving would be easy. Caring about somewhere does not mean you owe it your whole life, and staying can be loyalty or it can be fear, and those are not the same thing.
The Assistance Center
Ask him about the building and you get the one subject he is firm about. It used to be brochures, maps, and somebody behind a counter telling tourists what they absolutely could not leave without seeing. Now it is forms, notices, stacked ration crates, and whoever needs a hand that week.
People talk about needing the place as though it were embarrassing. Renn does not think it is, and he will say so plainly.
He also notices the things around town that everyone else has stopped seeing, and he will mention them — not as a request, and not expecting anybody to do anything about it. Just as a fact about the place.
